The Artists Studios

The Hylands Estate Artist Studios located in The Stables is home to a diverse and vibrant community of creatives.  Visit the studios for some inspiration and insight into their various creative processes. See both works in progress and exhibitions of finished works of art. Discover unique handmade pieces available to purchase, or get creative yourself through our range of workshops and experiences. Grab a coffee and lunch in The Deli café whilst you’re there. #MadeAtHylands

Our public facing studios are open Wednesday through Friday from 10am to 3pm. All studios, including upstairs, are open on our Open Estate Sundays where you can also enjoy the live music in the courtyard!

Mona Marnell

Mona Marnell is an established contemporary glass artist who exhibits and sells her work through galleries and from her studio here on the estate. She works to commission, creating bespoke glass art for residential and commercial spaces and she also offers a range of popular glass workshops throughout the year.

David is something of a veteran in the niche world of custom vinyl and resin art toys. His trademark hand-drawn abstract graffiti style is unique within the designer toy world and his work features in collections all over the world. He also customises trainers, skate decks (and anything else you can draw on) and occasionally releases limited edition t-shirts and prints.

Vanessa Brett Millinery 

Vanessa Brett is an award-winning creative millinery designer specialising in both occasion headpieces and hats for everyday wear. Winner of the Essex Wedding Awards 2022 for Best New Business, she offers ready made and bespoke options for clients. Vanessa is a member of the British Millinery Association and is passionate about sustainability, most of her designs are created from natural sinamay fabric woven from fibres of the Abaca plant. Vanessa is currently developing a hire option to accommodate the growing desire for a more environmentally conscious fashion culture.

Cosima’s

Cosima’s offers a wide range of bags and accessories that have been inspired by the nature around us and have the added benefit of being wipe clean and waterproof – perfect for the British weather. Join Sue in her studio for her friendly sewing workshops, whether it’s starting from scratch or learning new sewing/bag making skills, all are covered in a range of one to one or group sessions.

Handmade by Han

Hannah Winter is an artist, illustrator and colour lover who previously spent a decade as a secondary school Art Teacher. She creates mixed media pieces using items from her collection of treasures such as vintage papers, postage stamps, buttons and shells. She also works in watercolour and coloured pencil as well as collage and textiles. Hannah sells cards and original artwork and is happy to take on commissions. Look out for workshops too.

3D Printing Gal

3D Printing Gal is a 3D printing studio producing a wide range of custom made items, including home décor, models, hand-held props, cosplay, and more. We use the latest in FDM and resin printing technology, including multi-colour printing. The plastic we use in our printers is eco-friendly and derived from corn to ensure a minimal impact on our planet. We also handle commissions, from theatre props to keyrings and architectural models. If you can imagine it, we can probably print it!

Ceramics by Alex

Alex Harrington has been working with clay ever since she was inspired after taking an online pottery course during lockdown 2020. When you visit her studio at The Stables you will be able to see and buy finished ceramic pieces, as well as discover the process behind them. In a corner of the studio, the potters wheel is situated where most of the making takes place. Glazing is then done by hand, and fired in the on-site kiln. Alex also runs a variety of workshops, where you can get hands on yourself.

Kip & Fig is a design and illustration studio established by Julie Fagan, an artist and designer-maker. Julie’s artwork, inspired by nature and vintage design, is used to create fabrics, art prints and mixed media works. Kip & Fig love to inspire and enable creativity. Jump start your own making by using one of Julie’s hand-drawn templates, crafting kits, tutorials or workshops.
